Our dream: A new center

Our pilot project was filled by five children in one week. We now have 14 children on the waiting list, and hope to start building a new daycenter as soon as possible.

A Day Center Built for Children – and for the Future

In collaboration with Oumnik Studio AS

The new EBO Growth day center is more than just a building – it’s a place for safety, development, and community. Together with Silvia, the architect at Oumnik Studio AS, we have designed a sustainable and locally adapted center, inspired by the needs of children and the cultural traditions of The Gambia.

🛠️ Local solutions that create lasting value

The building uses traditional construction techniques and natural materials such as oyster-shell plaster, reducing emissions and supporting local craftsmanship. It’s designed to maintain a healthy indoor climate – even in Gambia’s hottest months.

🧒 Spaces for learning, play, and rest

The center includes two main areas: one for education and activities, and one for rest, with sleeping spaces and sanitation facilities. Flexible classrooms, a reading loft with built-in storage, and cozy corners give children both community and calm.

🌿 Designed with care for people and planet

The project supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals – including good health (Goal 3), quality education (Goal 4), reduced inequalities (Goal 10), and sustainable communities (Goal 11). With natural ventilation, locally sourced materials, and sculptural solar “trees,” the center will be energy-efficient and climate-smart.

An additional building will host events, markets, and local activities – and offer opportunities for the center to showcase and sell products made by or with the children, creating space for community and local value creation.

🫂 A gathering place for the local community

At the heart of the courtyard, three solar “trees” provide shade and clean energy – a modern nod to the Gambian tradition of gathering under trees to share tea and conversation..
